Ironing Silk: Temperature & Care Tips for Silk in 2025 | TOWNSSILK Guide

Jul 4, 2025 townssilk

Many customers ask us after receiving their TOWNSSILK silk products such as pillowcases, pajamas, or bedding: Can you iron silk? What temperature is safe? Is there a method that won’t damage the fabric? TOWNSSILK shows you how to care for silk safely, gently, and elegantly at home.

Can You Iron Silk?

Yes — but only with the correct temperature and technique. Silk is made of animal protein (fibroin) and is extremely sensitive to heat. One mistake can ruin the fabric in seconds.

Recommended Ironing Temperatures for Silk

Method Temperature Notes
Dry ironing 90℃–120℃ (Low setting) Do not exceed 130℃, risk of fiber melting
Steam with iron Distance >10 cm Do not steam directly on the surface
Garment steamer Low + cloth Use a protective cloth in between

Note: Never use cotton or linen settings. Silk cannot tolerate high temperatures.

How to Iron Silk Properly

  1. Set your iron to “Silk” or 90–120℃.
  2. Iron silk while it's slightly damp or mist it lightly.
  3. Iron on the reverse side to preserve shine.
  4. Place a clean cotton cloth in between — no direct contact!
  5. Hang after ironing and allow to cool in the air.

Common Mistakes When Ironing Silk

Mistake Consequence
High temperature setting Fabric melts, yellows, or loses shine
No protective cloth Shiny spots or scorch marks
Steam nozzle too close Water spots, bubbling
Silk completely wet Hard residue, permanent stains
